They view themselves as overweight despite becoming severely malnourished and underweight.<\/p>\n<p>The fear of gaining weight takes over their lives to such an extreme degree that no evidence to the contrary shakes their belief that they\u2019re overweight.<\/p>\n<p>Physical symptoms of anorexia include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Anemia (lack of iron in your blood)<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Amenorrhea (not menstruating)<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Weakness<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Muscle wasting<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Low blood pressure (hypotension)<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Thinning bones<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Dry, discolored skin<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Constipation<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Constantly feeling cold<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Chronic fatigue<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Infertility<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Lanugo (fine hair growth)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Without expert treatment, patients with anorexia can suffer brain, heart, and organ damage. Some people with anorexia nervosa starve themselves to the point their organs fail, and they die. Their inability to control the binges means that they feel such shame and fear of weight gain afterward that they make themselves vomit.<\/p>\n<p>Bulimics also take laxatives and diuretics, over-exercise, or fast to prevent weight gain. However, the urge to binge inevitably returns, and the cycle begins again.<\/p>\n<p>Binge-eating disorder also involves overeating, but people don\u2019t make themselves vomit afterward.
